Retirement Poems and Verses for a Card

When writing and sending a retirement card to someone you may find yourself wanting to add a little more than a standard message. You might feel it’s a bit boring or could do with being more exciting and interesting.

One good way to do this is to use a retirement poem or verse alongside your message. One of these can liven up your card and put a smile on the recipients face.

However, writing a clever or touching retirement poem or verse is not something everyone can do. Being that adept with words doesn’t come naturally to many people.

So if you want to include one but can’t write your own then the best way to do so is use other people’s pre-written verses. That’s why we’ve bought together a large range of retirement verses and poems that you can use for free in your card! Try one or more of them below.

Retirement Verses

  • Fear no more the heat o’ th’ sun,
    Nor the furious winter’s rages.
Thou thy worldly task hast done,
Home art gone and ta’en thy wages.
    — William Shakespeare
  • An elegant sufficiency, content,
    Retirement, rural quiet, friendship, books,
Ease and alternate labour, useful life,
    Progressive virtue, and approving Heaven!
    — James Thomson, 1700-1748, Spring
  • O, blest retirement! Friend to life’s decline –
How blest is he who crowns, in shades like these,
A youth of labor with an age of ease!
    — Goldsmith
  • Don’t you stay at home of evenings?
Don’t you love a cushioned seat
In a corner, by the fireside, with your slippers on your feet?
    — Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr
  • All of us are gonna miss you,
so we send this card to say,
we wish you all the very best
    on this your retirement day.
  • It’s time to put your feet up,
It’s time to take a rest,
It’s time to be an expert,
In knowing that retirement is best,
    For doing all the things,
You’ve never had time to do,
Brings a sense of much fulfilment,
    And many joys to you!
  • We’re so sorry that you’re leaving us,
but you’ve earned the right to take,
the time to put your feet up,
    and enjoy a well-earned break!

Retirement Poems

  • May you always have work for your hands to do.
May your pockets hold always a coin or two.
May the sun shine bright on your windowpane.
May the rainbow be certain to follow each rain.
May the hand of a friend always be near you.
And may God fill your heart with gladness to cheer you.
  • You are about to board
    A really long flight
So put your seat belt on
    Clutch the armrest tight
The flight will take you to
    A beautiful destination
    It’s called Retirement
    Life’s longest vacation
  • Playing with grandkids
    Walking the doggie
    Weeding the garden
    Sipping on hot coffee
    Sprucing up the garage
    Watching TV
    You are going to become
    A lucky retiree
    Congratulations
  • Now is the time to do
    Everything you’ve always wanted to
Now is the time to enjoy
All the things which eluded you
Now is the time to catch up
    With friends and family
Now is the time to show the world
    That you’re an amazing retiree
    Happy retirement
  • You have retired
    From your work life
    But you haven’t yet retired
    From pampering your wife
    You have retired
    From being an employee
    But you haven’t retired
    From your household duties
    In reality you have not
    Retired after all
    For whatever it’s worth
I hope you have a ball
    Congratulations
  • I have respected and admired
    For the way you inspired
    Everyone in the company
You have made us all see
    That hard work always pays
    And goodwill always stays
Courage keeps you in good stead
    Ensuring prosperity ahead
    Congratulations
  • A long innings of your life
    You have completed
    This golden period
    You’ve always awaited
    Relaxing and unwinding
Is all you have to do
    Best wishes for your retirement
    Congratulations to you
  • Nothing to do
    You will be free
    Be whatever
    You want to be
    Good luck for
    Your retirement
    I hope it is
    Full of enjoyment
    Congratulations
  • Your contribution to our lives
    Will never be forgotten
Your love for us all these years
    Has spoilt us rotten
    Your encouragement all this time
    Has kept us motivated
    Your cheerful company has
    Always kept us satiated
    We are sad and grumpy
To let you leave like this
We wish you a happy retirement
May your life be full of bliss
    Congratulations
  • Your school days now are over,
    The fun has just begun!
So throw away the rule book,
It’s time to break every one!
    No more meeting deadlines,
    Risk assessments and more,
It’s time to put those files down,
And head right out that door!
You’ll miss your students and staff,
And the buzz of the busy day,
But you will have so much to look forward to,
    As you retire today!
  • Oh yes the jobs can now be put off,
    To be done another day,
Life can be taken at a slower pace,
Nothing HAS to be done today,
    No more watching clocks,
Racing round, getting here and there,
And as for avoiding the rush hour,
You no longer need to care,
    So indulge yourself in hobbies,
Learn a new skill – all at your own pace,
This retirement lark is what it’s all about,
It will all soon fall into place!
